| NASHVILLE, TN – Adtec Digital's edje-1013 digital video players are creating a Captive Audience Network (CAN) solution for Odeon Cinemas in the United Kingdom. Systems integrators Trimedia Broadcast Ltd. and Sound Associates have designed and installed the first remotely operated projector systems in two Odeon Cinema foyers, bringing the broadcast technology to the film industry. "Adtec's edje not only cuts operating and equipment costs, but allows individual cinemas a communication tool with the ability to tailor content specifically to their audience," Trimedia's Managing Director, John Donovan, said. "DVD's and video cassettes are no longer required. Cinema staff are not relied upon to load trailers or even to switch on the projector. Also discarded are VHS players, serial-controlled video players and external control systems." Adtec's edje uploads MPEGS of new film trailers over IP, then plays the content straight to the screen. Each projector can be independently programmed to run specific trailers at specific times. "Individual cinemas have the option of editorial access to their foyer screens, allowing them to tailor content to their own operations," Donovan said. "Providing public information, promotional offers and even local advertising are all comfortably within the capabilities of the system." Adtec's edje has a 20GB hard drive with CAT 5 input and comes equipped with a software interface to build scheduled playlists. "The edje box automatically dials the server at Sound Associates at selected intervals and compares its current schedule with latest play list," Donovan said. "It then updates and amends its content accordingly." Adtec's edje-1013 is designed for integration into global multimedia networks and facilitates dynamic MPEG and Bitmap audiovisual presentations without the use of a personal computer. "This technology sets a new standard for the industry and the advantages of its use are so obvious that its hard to see how anyone updating their systems would not be convinced," Sound Associates Managing Director, Graham Lodge, said. "Cost is a strong argument in its favor, but it's the speed and reliability of the system that really sets it apart. Adtec's edje runs the show, determining the content and turning the projectors on and off at predetermined times." The cinema fire alarms can also be linked in, switching screens and audio to support evacuation procedures before automatically powering down. "Any organization needing to communicate with an audience on-site can benefit from this technology," Trimedia's Technical Business Manager, Neil Fluester, said. "Adtec's edje has enabled SA to communicate with and update content remotely. By replacing bulky hardware with an intelligent CAN system that is quickly updatable over the internet, the new system is able to save money in hardware and warrant a faster response and greater reliability."
