NASHVILLE, TN – Bye-Net Wireless of St. Johns, Newfoundland successfully tested service delivery across their wind-powered ISP network with an Adtec Digital edje-2000 MPEG 2 streaming encoder and an edje-1010 set-top-box. "The video quality was stunning," Project Manager, Patrick DeBourke, said. "Nobody is going to believe the video was encoded as MPEG 2 at full D1 resolution with a data rate of 3.5 Mb/s." Bye-Net provides internet and VoIP services to a handful of rural subscribers. Sited on a nearby mountain, the access point operates with power from a 1500 watt wind turbine. "Bye-Net wanted to see what was possible," Project Manager, Patrick DeBourke, said. "We connected a DVD player at the network center to Adtec's edje-2000 and pressed play. On an IP set-top-box located 17 miles away in a rural community, the picture appeared." By eventually adding three or four premium channels, Triple Play services offer a source of future revenue streams from Bye-Net's growing subscriber base. "Triple Play services with Adtec encoders is a viable technology," Adtec Sales Engineer, Michael Bush, said. "IP stream shaping on the edje-2000 eliminates video jitter. By controlling the stream, it reduces buffering on the IP set-top-box and improves delivery over hybrid Ethernet/ATM networks." "Bye-Net demonstrates how a Triple Play network can be deployed in rural locations worldwide with wind-powered and off-the-shelf equipment." Patrick DeBourke has over twenty years experience in Telecommunications including work for Nortel Networks, MCI Worldcom, Grove Telecommunications, Nord Systems and Bell Canada.
