| SmartCast Playout Center Relies on Adtec Digital MediaHUB-HD-422 Multi-format Multi-codec Contribution Encoder

UNTERFÖHRING, GERMANY -- What comes into German living rooms on the screen often has its origin in Unterföhring. There sit the big German broadcasters ZDF and ProSieben as well as a variety of service companies that have settled around the TV channels. In Unterföhring SmartCast has also located a playout center and sends programs throughout the world. More than 40 TV programs rely on SmartCast for their television, and SmartCast relies on the Adtec Digital MediaHUB-HD-422 contribution encoder.
A special feature of SmartCast is the most bandwidth-efficient broadcasting of TV programs via satellite. While many television providers broadcast their programs via satellite bandwidth in 4 to 6 megabits, the technique of SmartPlayout allows the proliferation of TV channels with bandwidths similar quality at 1 to 2 megabits.
"That saves a lot of money, or makes room for more programs," said Christian Brenner, Managing Director of SmartCast. SmartPlayout technology is already represented at the major satellite uplink sites in German-speaking territories (Unterföhring, Usingen, Vienna).
Especially in the so-called "cascade" multiple encoding-decoding operations, so much depends on the quality of the individual steps. So it is not surprising that SmartCast relies on the MediaHUB-HD-422 for contribution. At NAB 2009, Adtec Digital won the TV Technology STAR Award for its multi-format multi-codec encoder, the MediaHUB-HD-422.
